KNIFEPLAY - LIVE IN SEATTLE

from $12.00

PLEASE NOTE: This is a pre-order that is expected to ship in 3-4 weeks. All items ordered alongside this release will ship together.

Live in Seattle documents Knifeplay’s closing show supporting shoegaze pioneers RIDE in North America during May of 2024. That night, the band would lament the tour with their most passionate performance to date. After playing, they would find out that the RIDE crew had generously recorded their whole set. In the months following, Knifeplay’s Johanna Baumann would go on to mix the performance, and what had originally been intended as a merch table exclusive bootleg tape soon showed enough promise for a proper release. The result was Live in Seattle.

The record features 2 songs from their critically acclaimed 2022 sophomore record Animal Drowningas well as 3 new songs to be featured on their long awaited third LP. Animal Drowning cuts “Lonely Sun” and “Nobody” both feature expanded and hypnotic instrumental/noise sections performed by the most recent Knifeplay lineup, which debuted as a group with their acclaimed Spirit Echo EP (November 2024).

The 3 new tracks showcase an evolution of the band’s sound as they leave behind bandleader Tj Strohmer’s solo bedroom shoegaze aesthetics and into a group oriented, lyric focused, folk-rock direction. The band uses classic textures from the Americana palette such as slide guitar, acoustics, piano, cello, etc. Yet intersperses these sounds with the menacing walls of feedback, distortion, and melodrama that have come to define the band’s sound. Lyrically, Strohmer comes into form on these tracks, as he releases more instrumental control to his most recent group, and every player shines brightly on this record. On Live in Seattle, we hear Knifeplay as a connected group, whose music exudes the connectedness of their long-standing friendships and bonds through music. Knifeplay shows here their rare ability to polarize audiences, leaving some entranced, some alienated, but none without impression.
